What Really Matters
Reflections After 46 Years of Law Practice
After 46 years of law practice and after 58 years of working, I’m reading more and more obituaries of friends who are passing unexpectedly.
While work is important, personal relationships and doing what you want to do in life is more important than anything else.
It’s easy to say that you’ll do something tomorrow, but tomorrow may never come. Do your bucket list items now, because as Ferris Bueller said, “It can all be over in the blink of an eye.”
Don’t Miss What Really Counts
Don’t miss your kids’ events for work. It’s not worth it. You don’t get these days back.
I have friends who missed everything with their kids—and now their kids have little or nothing to do with them.
Games are important. Recitals are important. Take vacations. Go places. Do things.
Do them now, before your name ends up in the paper on a page you won’t be able to read.
Work Has Its Place—But So Does Life
I still like work. It’s important to challenge your mind and keep learning. But do things while you still can.
Make time for your family. Spend time with friends. And remember: none of us will ever wish we worked more when it’s all said and done.
